Interesting Facts About Hickory Wood:

Hickory wood has a higher density than most woods, making it very durable.

The grain pattern is mostly straight, tight, and more subtle than oak.

Because of its resiliency, in the past, it was used to make airplanes. Today it is used for utility items such as axes, hammers, and shovels, as well as, paddles, drumsticks, and fine furniture.

A well finished piece of furniture preserves the beauty of wood for the years to come. On our stain wall in the store we feature four types of wood including: Oak, Maple, Rustic Cherry, and Quartersawn White Oak. We also work with other woods such as, Hickory, Elm, and Walnut upon request.

Pictures cannot do the stain options justice, to get a better feel on how the stains actually look your best option is to come into the showroom and see them in person.  Each of the swatches can be pulled off the wall and taken the the piece of furniture you'd like in that stain to help you envision the piece that you design.  We will be happy to help you. 

Picking up Furniture

When you've finally taken the leap and decided to purchase a beautiful piece of furniture you want to be certain that you can take it home without bringing harm to the heirloom piece.  The best idea is to bring lots of blankets or stop by a store and pick up some moving blankets.

Yes, it is possible to use cardboard or Shrink Wrap, (you know that plastic wrap ) but when it comes down to it a layer of plastic in between a piece of furniture and the back of your truck isn't the best. If you know you are picking up furniture, play it safe - it never hurts to have extra blankets.

If you don't think you have enough blankets and you don't want to purchase any try these soft items.

• sleeping bags
• towels

We will heave a sigh of relief when we see your trunk or truck bed supplied with blankets.

Quartersawn Wood

On the wood species and stain sample wall we have Oak, Maple, Rustic Cherry, and QSWO.

Those last four letters often get a raised eyebrow, and most people aren't sure what QSWO is.

Hopefully, this will clear it up for you.

QSWO stands for Quarter Sawn White Oak.

Quarter Sawn wood is milled from the same type of log that typical white oak comes from it's just milled in a different fashion to obtain a different grain and more dense wood.

This particular milling provides the beautiful small grain in the wood that is often seen on well made antique furniture. 

Elm Wood

The grain is so different and unpredictable that it draws your attention.  It rivals the quartersawn white oak for visual interest.

While you may not have heard of elm wood being used for fine furniture by the Amish that is primarily because of the toughness of the wood.  In years past Elm wood was used to make wooden cart wheels and wagon bed because of its durability. The solidness of the wood make it almost impossible to hand cut and hard on machine blades. Elm also lost popularity due to an incurable fungus that has affected Elm trees.

With all of it's fine qualities: hard, durable, with a beautiful grain...elm wood has all my recent attention.
